I am Haotian Shi (石皓天), a Tenured Associate Professor at the College of Transportation, Tongji University. I cowork at the Shanghai Municipal Peak Discipline Center for Traffic Operations and Simulation (TOPS) with Prof. Jian Sun. Prior to this position, I served as a Research Associate at the Connected & Autonomous Transportation Systems Laboratory (CATS) lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, working with Prof. Xiaopeng (Shaw) Li. I competed my Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering (Transportation Engineering) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in May 2023, supervised by Prof. Bin Ran. I hold a multidisciplinary portfolio of degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and Tianjin University, including a Ph.D. and M.S. in Transportation Engineering, an M.S. and B.S. in Computer Sciences, and an M.S. and B.S. in Power Machinery & Engineering.
My primary research interests include Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs), traffic flow modeling and control optimization, AI-empowered intelligent transportation systems, and human-machine intelligent interaction. I have published over 40 academic papers in top-tier transportation or computer science journals such as Transportation Research Part C/E、IEEE T-ITS、CACAIE、COMMTR、AAP. Additionally, I hold more than 30 granted invention patents in China and the United States.
I was selected for the National High-Level Young Talent Program and the Shanghai High-Level Talent Program. I have received several awards, including third place in the first Onsite Autonomous Driving Algorithm Challenge guided by the NSFC, ITS Wisconsin Award, and the IEEE “Shape the Future of ITS” First Prize. I serve as a program committee member for international conferences such as AAAI 2026 and ITFT 2024, and as an international committee member for the World Transport Conference (WTC) in areas like intelligent cloud management, intelligent connected vehicles and vehicle-road coordination, CAV policies and regulations, and intelligent driving services. Additionally, I serve as a Senior Member of China Highway & Transportation Society (CHTS).
I recruit Ph.D. and Master’s students each year with backgrounds in transportation, automotive engineering, computer science, mathematics, and related fields. Students interested in autonomous driving, intelligent transportation systems, AI, and human-machine interaction are welcome to apply.
